The School4Sea Project

The School4Sea Project is a recycling competition for primary schools and high schools in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It runs from the 15th of July 2019 until the 15th of November 2019.

Durban-based entrepreneur and environmental campaigner Grant Blakeway has two major goals this year: to complete 1.5 million oar strokes in the 2019 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, and to see 1.5 million plastic bottles recycled in his home province of KZN.

As one of only two South African competitors in the 2019 edition of the world’s toughest ocean-rowing race, Grant is committed to reaching the finish line. As a solo rower, he will do this alone… By completing 1.5 million oar strokes to cover the 4800km between La Gomera in the Canary Islands and English Harbour in Antigua.

As an eco-warrior, Grant is determined to keep 1.5 million plastic bottles out of landfills in KZN. More specifically, plastic bottles made from PET (polyethylene terephthalate). Grant is recycling the PET bottles that he collects at home, at work, and from Durban’s beaches, in pursuit of his goal. But he cannot do this alone… He needs more hands on deck.

From the 15th of July 2019 until the 15th of November 2019, participating schools will collect and recycle plastic beverage bottles.

Only PET(1) cooldrink and water bottles are eligible.

Each school must have an audited tally of the number of bottles collected during the competition period.

Each school will be responsible for the creation, organisation, and implementation of its own recycling programme in order to participate in this competition.

Further details are provided in the PDFs at the bottom of this page.

There are two cash prizes up for grabs…

  • R30 000 for 1st place
  • R10 000 for 2nd place

Grant will track the competition progress here on his website and on his social media channels to showcase participating schools.

The winners will receive a video shout-out from Grant in La Gomera, before the race begins.

The school badge of each participating school will be featured on Grant’s boat.
